 Regulateurs Europa is well known for its “Viking” governing/ engine management systems. These are applied widely to industrial, marine and traction applications.
One of the earliest application for the “Viking 22” governor was a trial operation on a high-speed train in Australia. The superior performance and reliability of this unit led to the customer specifying this control when the fleet of 9 trains was re-engined with MAN B&W VP185 power units.
In addition to the “Viking 22” traction control units, RE fitted the trains with monitoring that could relay the status of the power car back to the maintenance depot, or to the UK, via a mobile phone link. A GPS system was included that allowed the train operator to accurately pinpoint the locomotive on the track. The protections embodied in the controller and the condition based maintenance facility all help to reduce the risk of locomotive failure on the track.
In June this year, our colleagues in Australia called to propose that we raise a glass to celebrate 500,000 hours of operation with only one major ”out of course” failure.
